SATURN DEVOURING HIS SON, A LEMON
I am not sure if you know, but if you go and see Goya's Black Paintings at the Prado gallery in Madrid, you can get round the back of Saturn Devouring His Son and see Saturn's buns. I was quite surprised at how shapely they were, and so resolved to share the information as soon as I returned. This piece was made for the group show, Devour The Sour, and as well as his dramatic rear view, shows Saturn biting into a lemon. Part of my early experiments making glazes, the finished colouring of this piece was quite surprising.
As I write this, there is an exhibition of Goya's etchings, along with those of Paula Rego. Jonathan Jones, that bloviating fop reviewing it in the garden, says, "For the record, I can’t think of any other artist who would come out of a fight with Goya well. If the Prado were to put on a Francis Bacon show, in among its gallery of Goya’s Black Paintings, even Bacon would look pathetic." This leaves me with a very peculiar image. Thank you Mr Jones.
This piece was exhibited at the Devour the Sour exhibition at Walcott Chapel in May 2024. I had posted on Instagram that you could win the piece if you came up to me at the exhibition and said, "That Gum You Like Is Coming Back In Style" or something similar. However, no-one did, so it remains in my possession.
